What Merchants Think

The "Shopify Translate & Adapt" app receives mixed reviews from merchants. While appreciated for being intuitive and saving time, the app currently falls short on several fronts: inefficiencies in translation accuracy and limitations on the number of translatable languages. Additionally, merchants express frustration over lack of effective support and technical glitches affecting the app's reliability and performance.

Key Strengths

  • Easy to use with intuitive interface.
  • Saves time compared to manual translation.
  • Allows for personalized translation of fields.
  • Facilitates reaching international audiences.
  • Does not incur extra fees.

Common Concerns

  • Allows translation of only up to two languages automatically.
  • Issues with retaining edits and some translations not saving or updating.
  • Lack of advanced multilingual SEO features.
  • Translation accuracy issues requiring significant manual corrections.
  • Technical issues such as server errors and translation data loss.
  • Poor support experience reported by some users.

Final Thoughts

"Shopify Translate & Adapt" is seen as a useful tool for basic translation needs but falls short for businesses with more complex requirements. Its easy-to-use interface is praised, but ongoing technical issues and limited language support hinder its potential. Merchants seeking advanced functionalities might need to explore other multilingual apps or hope for future improvements addressing these drawbacks.

Good enough for me, but a final review of a language professional is very much appreciated, if not necessary. Thank you.

Translate & Adapt is OK but when you need to translate titles into another languages - words aren't always translated for no apparent reasons... It takes ages to clear all the mess up... If they can correct it then I would give 5 stars...

No es perfecta pero si bastante buena. Agradecería que se pudiera añadir personalizaciones antes de realizar la traducción global, para evitar errores semánticos, pero eso tampoco lo tienen otras apps de pago, entiendo que esta no lo tenga tampoco

I'm reporting a massive failure in translation integrity and UI design inside Shopify's Translate & Adapt app. The app is silently cherry-picking what it translates and has published many half-translated, outdated, or blank pages to my live international storefront — without warning, notice, or transparency. It is hiding this behind a deeply inefficient and non-transparent interface, and leaving me with a grueling, manual audit job that no modern technology stack should ever require. This issue has cost me visibility in Google, revenue from international traffic, and days of unpaid labor just to locate and fix what Shopify never properly built or marketed in the first place. Translate & Adapt is Failing on Every Front: It has arbitrarily skipped translating major portions of many product descriptions, default product and variant fields, collections, metaobjects, menus, etc. It does not alert me to untranslated or out-of-sync content. It offers no dashboard or audit view to track which items have been translated and which haven’t. It forces me to manually click through every parent > child > grandchild element in the app to detect translation failures. And with 975 failures according to Google, this workflow is unacceptable. Each click comes with a 10–20 second load time, and each missing translation takes up to 2 minutes to fix. There is no batch view, no summary, and no timeline of what's been changed or ignored. SEO Consequences — and Why This Is Costing Me Revenue The result is that hundreds of translated pages and site elements are not approved by Google because of: Outdated content Wrong languages (e.g., body text in English on a Dutch page) Thin content (e.g., product title + images, but no body text) Blank product descriptions Mismatched content across locales Missing translations for default fields or field values (e.g., price, color, gender, and age which are required by Google) Google doesn’t just check if a translated page exists — it checks for: Relevant content in the expected language Unique, high-quality body copy Content-to-code ratio and completeness If a page is: Just images or 1–2 words Missing description text Marked Dutch URL but written in English Identical or near-duplicate to the English page Showing outdated content that's inconsistent with the same page in another translation Lacking critical information like price, color, gender, and age group Google will suppress or deindex that page. And that’s exactly what’s happening: Google Search Console currently shows 975 translated URLs as “Not Approved” — many flagged for content, indexing, or missing product attributes that originate directly from incomplete translations and broken data inheritance caused by Translate & Adapt. Shopify Has Misled by Omission. Shopify markets Translate & Adapt as a seamless way to expand globally. I built my international storefront using Shopify’s tools, trusting the system to behave predictably and honor its own architecture. Instead, I’ve been forced into a days-long audit of every product, data field, menu, collection, etc., wasting time I should be spending on design, production, and marketing. I'm now looking at at least a full week of manual fixes ahead — just to correct what should never have happened, much less happened deep under the hood with no notification or warning. What I Need from Shopify Immediately: A formal acknowledgment that Translate & Adapt cherry-picks content silently and has no features in place to notify merchants or help them fix it in a reasonable workflow. A clear admission that this breaks international SEO and harms indexing in Google Merchant Center and organic search. A commitment and timeline for implementing basic protections: A visual dashboard of untranslated content A bulk view of translation coverage Warnings for untranslated or outdated content Documentation of these limitations and a bug report escalation to the Translate & Adapt product team. Credit or compensation for the hours of manual work and the lost visibility/revenue caused by this system failure since installing this app. This is not a content issue. It’s a platform issue — a system that publishes broken content without ever notifying the merchant. Please escalate this ticket to a senior product manager or tech lead on the Translate & Adapt team. I am not accepting surface-level replies. This needs to be addressed at the architectural level.

I really love this app. We've been using it for over 1 year in one of our shops, and are now implementing a second shop using it as well. I like that I have the ability to change the automatic translations to my taste, however I do wish that the option to show products in the reverse order was available inside the app... as it is they are always displayed by their default order, and to translate new products as I insert them, I always have to navigate the bottom arrow to the very last page (and they are a lot), so that I can translate the latest product!... if you could give the option to order the products in reverse order, it would help so much!!!

App have synchronization bug: SEO fields that are filled in the product admin, may don't automatically get registered as translatable content in the translation system. The workaround is to clear and re-enter the SEO content. This affects the synchronization between product SEO data and the translatable content system. Please fix it!

Use Google Translate for up to two languages at no cost—a great boost for smaller stores or initial global expansion

I need a lot of translation work into German and this translation app delivers every time. Since I am a native speaker, I check the translations and they are on point, exact without fail. I highly recommend it. Amazing app and awesome support from the company.

Certaines fonctionnalités sont agréables. Pour de petits sites, c'est intéressant. Par contre, pour de plus gros, il y a trop de corrections nécessaires. Par exemple, le signe & reste en code HTML et affiche &. Cette situation est assez problématique.

Super utile pour traduire automatiquement en plusieurs langues et sans fautes en 1 clic. Le seul bémol est que si vous faites des modifications, il faut aller relancer la traduction (elle ne se fait pas automatiquement) Mais je recommande

Great app, just hoping it will be expanded to more than 2 language's. The 2 are free and that is also great, i would be happy to pay extra to get more added!

Hay que ir actualizando las traducciones. Porque si cambias algo no se actualizan. Pero funciona muy bien!

This app could have been perfect, so easy to use and intuitive, even fun to translate, but why limit to 2 languages? Please let us pay for more translations, we will gladly pay for it. It's the only reason I put 1 star. Other than that I love this app.

Wir nutzen Translate & Adapt gerne, vor allem die Verbesserungen über die Zeit wie Beibehaltung von Formatierungen und die einfache "Neuübersetzung" von älteren Einträgen machen uns die Mehrsprachigkeit leicht.

I was told by the Theme developer that the Translate & Adapt app was necessary to provide a second language (Japanese) to my store, thus installed it. While I appreciate the effort to streamline the translation process and find the search functionality to be indispensable, the automatic translations are impressively horrendous and cannot be used. Not a single one of them. The Japanese translations are very unprofessional in tone and manner and laughably incorrect. Many translations make no sense whatsoever. We spent two months manually translating every single word of text throughout not only the website, but checkout journey and all hardwired communications and finished about 1/2 of the stores translations. Then, we had an issue with the navigation menu not leading to the correct URL, thus contacted Shopify to help. The IT support was able to identify and rectify the issue, but in the troubleshooting process, accidentally pressed the “Auto-translate” button, which then over-rode all of the manual translations that we spent months painstakingly translating. Considering that there is no way to download an Excel spreadsheet for the translations nor is there a way to identify which translation applies to which page without constantly referencing the website while applying the translations, this mistake has set us back tremendously. It is absolutely incomprehensible that Shopify IT support not only has access to that button, but that pressing one button can override ALL of the manual translations. The icing on the cake is that there is no way to reverse the action or revert the code back. USE WITH EXTREME CAUTION!!! To the Shopify Product Managers / UI/UX Team, please consider the following enhancements: 1: Move the location of the “Auto Translate” button to a less conspicuous place. The current placement invites errors and mistakes. 2: Add a confirmation pop-up that clearly explains the ramifications of pressing the button 3: Add a functionality to reverse any changes 4: Add a functionality to restrict usage of this button or grey it out for some users 5: Make a proper user manual and ensure your internal staff know the ramifications of pressing that button

Limited. Tried using this App and everything was looking really good, until we realised that it was translating underlying URL links in the body of our pages. This meant that the URL's in the links weren't correct, causing 404 errors. Once again, the standard response from Shopify was that the App was limited, and that we would need to pay more for a third party App that might do a better job.
