What Merchants Think

Merchants appreciate the idea and core mission of "Planet—Carbon‑neutral shipping" to support environmental sustainability by offering carbon offsetting options. However, while many store owners endorse the initiative's intent, there are notable concerns about its execution and cost transparency. Some users find it beneficial and easy to implement, but others are frustrated by limitations and technical issues.

Key Strengths

  • Positive reception of the app's environmental mission to promote carbon neutrality.
  • Ease of setup and integration for some users.
  • Support for eco-friendly initiatives aligns with merchants' values.

Common Concerns

  • Unapproved and confusing charges, particularly related to non-shipping orders and hidden fees.
  • Lack of customization options for badges and payment displays.
  • Technical issues, including incorrect carbon offset data and integration problems with certain themes.
  • Complaints about insufficient support and unclear contact options.
  • Dashboard and app interface usability problems, including metrics display and admin errors.

Final Thoughts

Overall, "Planet—Carbon‑neutral shipping" is acknowledged for its noble environmental objective and the appeal of being part of carbon-offsetting solutions. However, various implementation issues and transparency concerns limit its effectiveness for many merchants. Improving customization functionalities and addressing technical glitches could enhance the app's utility and trust among users.

There is no support or a way to download results. Just a dash board with an image. Even when contacting shopify support they had no idea how to get the data to me. I will be moving to a better hosted site like green spark.

This program is terrible. I was looking for something that would help us showcase our work. They expect you to pay $300.00 a month to be carbon-neutral. Response: Their response is misleading. I never said the $300 was a set price. It is based on how much you ship and ours works out to $300-600 per month. That amount is ridiculous. They do not take into account the things we actually do ourselves to reduce our carbon footprint, and there is nowhere for us to notate that information (we do a lot). There is no reason we should HAVE to pay someone else to offset our carbon neutrality. There is an option to have the customer pay 50 cents, but if you choose that option, then you don't get the badge - and it looks to the customer as though you are putting it all on them and not sharing in the program. It's a great idea, but the execution of the program is poor.

Video only suitable for US users. Shows $ as currency and would be better for us in £ with British speaker and phrases.

DO NOT USE! Moved from Ecologi to this as it appeared native, and better value, but they are are very sneaky in how they word the billing and our bill per shipment is crazily excessive. They're trying to claim we owe over $1000 although we set up a cap. This is ridiculous and if they try to action we will need to go to court or chargeback. ### Edit: the package size, weight and dimensions aren't known by Planet as they are not entered in our backend. If you are using product dimensions, for rugs, which are sent rolled, you are massively over-pricing. We are being charged at a rate of $10 per item. Initial pricing displayed was $0.35 per item. The cap is confusing as although we have not been charged over this per month it shows we owe x8 the total monthly cap.

Making unapproved charges. We are paying as much as $82 per order which is insane. The monthly spending limit doesn't help much because they will withhold and charge the remaining to next month.

1. It charges you for every order--even POS orders which don't require shipping. 58% of my sales are in-store. Insanely unethical to automatically charge *shipping* offsets for *non-shipping* sales. 2. It seriously inflates your numbers. I made 640 sales in the last 30 days, and was charged for 907 orders. (again, about 370 of these orders didn't require shipping). 3. The history graph shows I had nearly 200 sales *in one day* a few weeks ago. I actually had 29...and only 6 of those required shipping...and only 5 of those had shipped at this point. So I paid nearly $0.15*200=$30 in carbon offsets for 5 shipments for that one day. 4. The app ambiguates "orders" and "deliveries". Per my Shopify reports, I only had 288 "deliveries" in the time it claimed I had 907. Shopify, these infractions erode what little trust people have in environmental practices. I am happy to remove this review if you refund my inflated fees...including Planet fees for all POS orders. My company has been carbon neutral for years, and will continue to be so for sometime thanks to the overages I've paid using Planet.

Like all Shopify apps this one is a disaster. It's all marketing and no functionality. No way to turn it on/off in the cart and no way to talk to them. NO way to contact def - shopify support denied knowing anything about it and started explaining Planet Labs to be instead, a satellite company owned by my friends. FFS. No transparency about the payment tiers, the badge does NOT show up in my cart. Theres like so much info on Planet but nothing helpful and it doesn't work. What a waste of time.

Love the idea. Execution was challenging. Had installed for a couple of months without the badge showing - when I went to put badge on and it showed blank on my Shopify 2.0 theme I contacted support. I was initially told it should work on my specific theme but then on checking support concluded it was a theme problem and I need to contact the theme developer. Lost confidence when cute marketing stats on emmissions that show to me as Admin can't be shared with my customer or shown on a page on my website, for example - even if coded in. Took my money on each order for a couple of months worked fine. Payment trail very thoroughly done.

Love the idea and transparency with HOW the shipment becomes carbon neutral! But I can't add it to my checkout because I have a custom website instead of a Shopify theme. :( I can still use it in cart as a workaround, but customers very rarely view their cart that way. Please update it to work on checkout for custom stores!

We love this approach to reducing our carbon footprint. Thank you Shopify for sharing our values and making it easy to implement with this app.

I really like this idea, but I was able to change my contribution amount/percentage from another source. Will there be an option to contribute a % of orders? I want to contribute more than 0.15 per order. Can I contact support to change my plan to change that contribution amount? Thank you! Samson

Lovely idea and opportunity to easily offer carbon neutral shipping, but the customizations on the app could be a lot better. For example we can't display the banner in our store because the translation (that we can't change) is so clumsy.

PLANET is an excellent application because it eliminates shipping costs and acts significantly with its plans and initiatives in favor of the environment for a long period of ten to a thousand years.

Great idea, but lacking in many fields. The "Alliance" plan clearly says: "Your customers can choose carbon-neutral shipping for $0.25 USD/order". This is not optional - even if your customer doesn't opt in for this, you will be charged the 0.25 USD extra. Pay attention, otherwise you will be charged much more than what you might have expected. If you want to go for the "Alliance" plan, you have to choose between displaying your contribution or asking the customer to choose carbon-neutral shipping - you can't have both. The option is also only presented on the product page, not in the checkout. EDIT: After changing my plan to Pioneer and having it set at 0.08 USD per order, I still get charged 0.33 USD per order. This is a hidden fee that we didn't agree to.
