What Merchants Think

Merchants have mixed feelings about "Fraud Control". While some appreciate its potential to help manage fraud effectively, particularly when integrated with other tools like Shopify Flow, others find it lacking in functionality. The ability to block fraudulent activities before they occur is a significant concern for many users.

Key Strengths

  • Integration with Shopify Flow for extensive fraud checks
  • Useful fraud analytics for decision-making
  • Simple rule creation to block known fraudsters
  • Facilitation of automations that some users find beneficial

Common Concerns

  • Lack of direct customer support and assistance
  • Inability to block fraud effectively before checkout
  • Limited functionality without Shopify Payments
  • Issues with blocking features and template links not working
  • Potential to block legitimate orders if misused

Final Thoughts

Overall, "Fraud Control" is seen as a tool with promise, especially when paired with other Shopify applications like Flow. However, its limitations in blocking fraudulent transactions beforehand and the lack of direct support have left some users dissatisfied. It's best suited for merchants willing to invest time in integrating it robustly with their existing systems.

The app is useful if you take the time to understand and configure the rules correctly. Managing the messaging shown to customers when a checkout is blocked is important, as the default language is too soft for effective deterrence. One major drawback is the lack of visibility into who is actually being blocked at checkout. All blocked users remain anonymous, so you only see aggregate counts rather than actionable detail. Greater transparency here would significantly improve the product. Lastly, you can edit what the blocked customer sees by searching the language for "Decision rule block"

To access this app’s functionality, you need to open the “Rules” submenu from the left-hand navigation. Unfortunately, this submenu does not always appear and may require refreshing the browser tab. Additionally, pinning the app to navigation can cause it to disappear entirely. If this happens, you’ll need to locate the app via search, open the (…) menu in the upper-right corner, and unpin it from navigation. After refreshing your browser and reopening the app from search, Fraud Control should reappear in the left-hand menu under Apps. At that point, another refresh is often required before the Rules submenu becomes visible.

All this really provides is a little fraud dashboard. All the automations are done via Flow anyway, which can be done without having this app installed. It attempts to make it easier to install ready made Flows, but the the install template links all fail, so you have to go to Flow and find the template. I ended up combining two Flows,so there is just one flow that runs - if order is not high fraud risk it will capture the payment, or if high risk, tag and cancel the order.
