What Merchants Think

Merchants generally find "Shopify Collective" to be a game-changer for expanding product offerings and improving operational efficiencies. The app’s integration with Shopify has been particularly highlighted for its convenience and effectiveness.

Key Strengths

  • Streamlined order processing and inventory management through native Shopify integration.
  • Enhanced product discovery, allowing retailers to find and add new brands easily.
  • Facilitates industry relationships and provides access to a larger catalog, with examples like 1.7 million books for book wholesalers.
  • Continuous improvements based on user feedback, showcasing active development and upgrades.

Common Concerns

  • Commission fee model doesn't account for payment processing fees, leading to potential losses for retailers.
  • Challenges with sorting and importing items, especially from larger catalogs.
  • The issue of counting unmanageable product images could be a deterrent for large store operations.
  • Need for additional functionality, such as the modification of retails and better use of Shopify tags.

Final Thoughts

Overall, "Shopify Collective" is well-received as a valuable tool for Shopify retailers aiming to expand their product range and streamline operations. While there are some areas for improvement, especially around fee structures and product management features, the app's robust integration and commitment to enhancing user experience make it a strong choice for many businesses.

Limited reporting. No way to rate suppliers. Documents don't show where order originated, so it causes confusion for the customer. Suppliers can break connection with no warning, even if there are transactions pending, shipping, payment, etc...I could go on but not enough time. We have over 300 suppliers in collective, and have used it since early availability. We have encountered every problem that can be imagined. I would love to talk to someone on the team and give feedback. While collective is a very valuable tool it could be improved. So if anyone wants to reach out to us I am open to a conversation.

Our primary concern with Shopify Collective is the lack of stability and fairness it creates for retailers. Vendors can remove a retailer instantly, without notice, which can immediately break live product pages, collections, and customer-facing experiences. This creates operational risk that no serious business can absorb. There should be a mandatory 48-hour removal period with a clear system notice stating that the vendor has chosen to discontinue the relationship, allowing retailers time to remove products cleanly and protect their storefront and customers. Additionally, the margin structure on Collective is fundamentally misaligned with standard retail economics. Margins in the 10–20% range are not feasible. In traditional wholesale and dropship models, retailers operate at 30–50% margins, sometimes paired with a dropship or handling fee. Retailers are responsible for customer acquisition, marketing spend, customer service, chargebacks, returns, and brand reputation. Vendors benefit from reduced operational burden and expanded reach, yet Collective enables pricing structures that shift nearly all risk to the retailer. Collective has undeniably made distribution easier for suppliers, but ease of operation should not come at the expense of retailer sustainability. Making fulfillment and exposure easier while simultaneously eroding retailer margins is not a viable or ethical long-term model. There should be enforced minimum margin standards (at least 30–50%) for vendors on Collective, or those vendors should not be eligible to participate. Without protections around sudden removal and without realistic margin requirements, Collective disproportionately benefits suppliers while undermining the businesses that actually interact with and support the end customer.

The only complaint I have is that the return process is clunky. When a customer submits a return - it needs to go back to the brand (not our store). It doesn't require the brand to upload a return label immediately. Therefore I have customers contacting me for the label- and I sound awful telling them that I, as the store owner, can't upload it. Then they are left skeptical because the customer doesn't (and honestly shouldn't) have to know how we are working as a drop ship business through Collective. I think it should be set up to force a return label to be created on the spot. I have to reach out to the brand and bug them to upload the labels for my customers in most cases.

Love the app, it allows me to run the online store of my dreams. Could use some fixes to sorting products to import. Too many suppliers have 0 stock items listed and shifting through them is frustrating.

This app is great for small businesses like mine that can't afford a lot of inventory but need good quality products for their website!

Shopify Collective has been a game-changer for our marketplace. It makes onboarding new brands effortless, keeps inventory perfectly in sync, and allows us to expand our American-made catalog with confidence. It’s streamlined, reliable, and essential for how we run our business.

Get app... it is working well... the only issue I have is a shopify Design issue and I don't know how to change it. When customers place orders, many suppliers have marketing programs that follow up with customers on the order and on future marketing. Because the order is through our store, all of those emails come to us... they don't go to the actual customer, and our inbox gets stuffed with basically junk emails... Not sure if/how this cna be stopped, or if there's a way to pass it through to the actual customer. But it would be greatly appreciated. I know there would be a lot of moving parts ( so to speak) to make this happen, but I can't be the only person dealing with it. Thanks for the Reply... Maybe Shopify could send out info to those participating in the Collective and tell/ask them not to market to Collective orders... I think it would carry more weight coming from Shopify.

You should have the ability to adjust the price, but it’s crucial to pay attention to supplier margins. When margins are already low, shipping costs can easily wipe out your profit — sometimes leaving only a few dollars, or even putting you in the negative. More and more suppliers are dropping margins to around 20% (I even saw one as low as 8% tonight), which is really disheartening. It makes it hard to stay motivated with retailers, because this could have been such an amazing opportunity.

It's a nice way to add other products to your store that complement your inventory. Increases AOV for our store.

As a retailer, we'd love to be able to change prices! Could also use more support from Shopify, as sometimes we have questions that are hard to get answers to. Otherwise, it's an amazing collaborative platform and we love it!

Great seamless way to connect with brands/retailers that are an organic fit for your audience without changing anything for either party. We've already seen sales from most of our collective partners.

The way our world is right now we need to help each other with our small businesses. This Collective app is such a great way to be able to do just that! While I'm trying to build my inventory I am able to load other people items that fit well in my store & get a % of each sale. If you are like me & love to help others, try out the Collective app! I love that I'm able to get many different types of inventory that I know will not take weeks for my customers to get & I don't even have to worry about shipping! Win Win, Luna

Everything was fine for 2 years, then I got an email saying I am no longer eligible. Support cannot help me; seems they do not know how to even work Shopify Collective. It says I am no longer eligible because I need an active Shopify plan, yet my store has been active for 7 almost 8 years! This program needs improvement as well as the support staff that don't know how to help you so they just forward you around.

The Collective has been life changing for our shop. We design and produce our own home decor products, but with the Collective we've been able to expand our offerings and provide context for our collections. Highly recommend.

We have used Collective to share independent brands that we love and it has been seamless and wonderful. Previously we had used a lot of plug-ins and other tech to support this kind of connection with other brands and it was always buggy, expensive and horrible. Collective is awesome!

Shopify Collective is a great tool overall and makes it easier to connect with suppliers. However, there are some limitations that make it a bit frustrating. For cross-border stores, automatic payments aren’t supported, which really limits the ability to sell in the U.S. Some suppliers either don’t accept alternative payment methods or don’t understand how to work around this issue, which slows things down. Also, when searching for suppliers, the platform mostly shows local options. It would be much more useful if there was a simple way to filter or select suppliers by country or region, especially when you’re looking to expand internationally.

Shopify Collective is a good app if you want to complement your store with products from other stores, as it simplifies cross-store integration. However, the risk for retailers is often much higher than the actual benefits. Retailers can face chargebacks for mistakes made by suppliers, which feels unfair since these issues are outside of their control. Additionally, some suppliers offer very low margins—sometimes even less than what they’d pay out for referrals—making it difficult to justify the effort. Retailers also end up handling a large volume of customer inquiries and negative reviews caused by factors such as slow fulfillment and delayed dispatch, even though these problems originate directly from the suppliers. Overall, while the app has potential, the imbalance of responsibility between retailers and suppliers makes it a challenging tool to use profitably.

I loved Collective at first and encouraged my vendors to get on board so I could sell their products through the app. They did! I hired a team to inactivate the same products I was selling to use the collective app and recreated PDPs with collective. I sold through the app for 6-7 months ONLY TO WAKE UP ONE MORNING to see hundreds of products being DEACTIVATED with NO WARNING and NO solution. I have a generic note that says my store is not eligible and doesnt comply with collective. WHAT???? Even shopify cant help. I have a great business and i dont even know what policy i am not complying with. This is a disaster and I DO NOT RECOMMEND FOR ANY BUSINESSES.

Overall it's been great but some of my requests to vendors have gone unanswered for months making me wonder if Shopify is doing enough to actually get vendors to accept new storefronts. Nothing I can do on my end either short of reaching out to the vendor directly which negates a lot of the convenience of the platform.
